The Sinking of Ex-HMAS Adelaide

The Ex-HMAS Adelaide will be scuttled 1.87km off Avoca Beach (approximately 20 minutes drive from Kims). On the day you will be able to view the ship from Terrigal, North Avoca or Avoca with a Beach festival planned across North Avoca and Avoca Beaches, starting from 7.00am.

HMAS Adelaide is 138.1m long, with a beam of 14.3m and displacement of 4100 tonnes. When it is sunk it will become the first military dive site in NSW.

The ship was built in the United States of America and commissioned in 1980. It was decommissioned in 2008. During this time it ferried troops to the first Gulf War in 1991, to peacekeeping operations in East Timor and back to the Gulf in 2001.
The ship was also involved in the search and rescue in 1997of Solo yachtsmen Thierry Dubois and Tony Bullimore from the Southern Ocean.
